Picnics and plus-fours: report from June’s Tweed Ride

It’s been just over a week since Manchester’s most recent Tweed Ride, on Saturday 16 June. We gathered in all our finery on the station platform at the Museum Of Science & Industry (pictured below), where there was a vintage bike picnic underway and the tables were set with pretty checked cloths and vases of flowers. A reporter from BBC Radio Manchester recorded a few interviews and folk tucked into dainty sandwiches and gin and tonics.

Start as you mean to go on, and after a few test rides on the veteran bikes, including a penny farthing, the Tweed Ride set off, bound for the King’s Arms in Salford, where we garnered more support. Back outside, the conditions had turned rather brisk, but we’re made of stern stuff, so we drove through the drizzle to the Northern Quarter for a restorative pint of ale (men) and glass of white wine (ladies) in Common. Here our ranks were swelled by a couple of Tweed Ride regulars, although when it was time to head over to PopUpBikes via Angel Meadow Park, the Manchester spritz had put a few people off continuing further, so the final line-up did diminish somewhat.

Hey-ho, there was a brilliant turnout throughout the afternoon and everyone had made a stirling effort, with tweed jackets a-go-go, plus-fours, Argyle socks, caps and hats, pocket handkerchiefs, silk scarves and seamed tights all on show.
