Dave Hopla - 'Belfast's' Shooting Star

When Dave Hopla found Belfast from the '80's as a struggling basketball pro who does have believed that 30 years later although return with the title in the 'best shooter inside the world'.

Back in the 1980's Belfast wasn't the destination of choice for most foreigners searching for a sojourn. The troubles, associated bad press and climate didn't exactly manage to offer prospective visa applicants a nice-looking and safe oversea's experience or apprenticeship!

Many individuals who did come, were offered financial and other enticements coupled with to become reassured which they would be safe and happy here. Those who required task fairly those who valued experience over financial reward, could possibly have had family connections here and may 'think outside of the square'. Many reluctantly came to Northern Ireland using the sole intention of putting time in until a greater opportunity came their way.

As an avid fan of sports and someone actively involved with basketball here in the 1980's I've come across many American basketball players come to temporarily ply their trade playing in the National Leagues. Most included some trepidation but soon relaxed as locals offered hospitality and friendship far exceeding their expectations. Dave Hopla, was this type of import and just what I love to call, literally, one among Belfast's 'Brightest Shooting Stars!'

While at senior high school basketball had become Dave's passion but his relative short stature (5' 10") it comes with the three point line wasn't introduced prior to the 1980's meant he was under-rated and overlooked in the united states. He'd decided at the tender day of 16 a lot of work work and "charting" his progress in log books will be the step to his success. Almost 30 years ago, if we do persuasion by St Galls Club he consented to lower his sights for some time and come to Belfast for a 5 month season. He would have been a young guy with great ambition and few responsibilities during those times and even though the common of basketball wasn't perhaps first-rate, he loved the commitment, friendship and work ethic displayed by his new club mates. Soon Dave and Belfast a 'mutual admiration society' going anf the husband finished up staying for Three years! A very long time in almost any aspiring sports professionals life.

It was probably while throughout Belfast that Dave's career changed course and foundations were laid for his journey to learning to be a world-class 'shot doctor' and motivator. Dan Durkin, a fellow American with his fantastic coach at St Gall's identified in early stages that Dave were built with a unique pair of talents: he would have been a brilliant technical shooter, was obviously a minor show man and was not merely a good communicator but had a natural 'gift of the gab'!! However it wasn't until much later after he retired like a player in mostly minor leagues that Dave's career and true vocation as being a coach, mentor and motivational speaker begun to flourish.

I was fortunate to get the main Ulster Poly (now University of Ulster) women's basketball team which Dave consented to coach to supplement his meagre player wage from St Galls. Coaching us was obviously a small culture-shock to him. We merely took part in local leagues and several tournaments and our approach was more laissez-faire than he was adopted to inside the secondary school and college regimes in USA.

Looking back organic beef happen to be an ideal assignment for him to hone his communication and training skills. He adjusted towards the challenge but nevertheless demanded commitment and standards from us at training and throughout matches. In the beginning, i was somewhat giggly and awestruck from this blonde, blue-eyed, fast talking Adonis. He focussed on coaching much-needed basic skills but added a lifestyle coaching aspect by regularly reminding us that through basketball we can develop more vital life skills. He had an ability to entertain and teach by making use of clever anagrams, humour, charm and showmanship to obtain his points across. Several of his catch phrases were: "Perfect Practicing to achieve perfection!", "Good will be the enemy of GREAT!", "You guys couldn't catch flu in Alaska!" (A below subtle mention of the our not enough ball catching skill!) "Time matters simply to prisoners!" (Actually I'm still looking to figure that certain out?!)

One among his current motivational topics is S.U.C.C.E.S.S ( sacrifice, unselfishness, character, commitment, excellence & standards in someone). The Click here is a catchy mechanism allowing him to utilize his life experience stories to indicate how you can now attain success in everyday life. This method of delivery was crafted during among those early coaching sessions in Belfast. However ascend to the disposable throw line effortlessly shooting/swishing the basketball over and over again while at the same time 'shooting the breeze' and philosophizing! Many of us watched and listened attentively though admittedly most of us more admiring of his physique than his wisdom at that time. While no one continued to try out with the highest a higher level basketball just about everyone has gone onto have successful, fulfilling lives and look back with fondness on those times with 'Coach Hopla'.

Belfast and Ireland resulted in a lifelong impression on Dave's heart! He linked to the off beat sense of humour and was touched from the friendships he made within and outdoors of basketball circles. She has described Northern Irish people as "...the friendliest people the entire world!" That affection is reciprocal so when he returned recently to celebrate a reunion along with his old club St Gall's a fantastic crowd resulted in at Andersonstown Leisure Centre to find out Dave play again and to enjoy one among his shooting/motivational presentations.

Now as part of his early 50's Dave is still pushing himself and improving! She has accumulated almost 60 log books, recording in greater detail every shot she has ever taken!! He still consistently makes around 98% of the shots he takes while giving a motivational talk. He holds records for NBA 3 pointers in just a moment and also the most free throws in just a moment. One among his most impressive personal records is 1234 successful free throws uninterruptedly. It might look easy to some but keep in mind that that's an amazing feat! He continues to coach kids and NBA stars to shoot better and turn into the very best in life that they'll be. Most importantly Dave seems happy and balanced in the own life and is also still doing what he likes to do... hang out with family, play basketball and teach.

Dave is just one demonstration of an 'ordinary' individual that found Belfast, designed a connection after which went on to get extremely successful. Of course we can not take all of the credit however i love to think he took away somewhat Belfast spirit which helped him on his way!!
